Artist Statement.
Since moving into my new studio, my work is all about the outdoors in the broader sense. Huge terra cotta flower pots, small architectural swimming pool elements and of course, my favourite subject, animals.
My detailed vases, sculptures and still lives feature animals in a natural scenery. Fish swim through algae or butterflies pause on leaves. Their plasticity is supported by realistic colouring or detailed relief work to further emphasize the different color zones of a specific animal. Next to this baroque works there are poetic porcelain landscape scenes with wool thread embroidery.
The creation starts with a rough cardboard true size model. The clay work begins with the making of the base which can be a box, vase, plate, tile … The details of the scenery are sculpted and added and finally the animals. Their personalities and size often require adjustments. This is where working with paper porcelain or - clay is a necessity. It allows for highly detailed work, for some humidity variations in a large piece and it extends my working time.
After that, a slow and cautious drying of the piece makes the bisque fire successful. The overall off white acts as a uniform base to decorate with ceramic color pigments and/or coloured glazes before carefully brushing on a final transparent glaze. A second and final firing, makes the piece come to life.
The results are one-off works that are handbuilt and sculpted, where I strive to implement a natural look and feel of the animal in an opulent, baroque scenery. These detailed and enhanced scenes allow the viewer to discover small details and fun elements.
