Ceci n’est pas une céramique
I STARTED CERAMICS AT 45+, AFTER A CAREER IN THE CORPORATE WORLD.
I live in Brussels -Belgium and learned as much as possible about ceramics by doubling daytime and evening classes, while taking care of my elderly father.
From the onset, some 20+ years ago, I worked on my own paperclay recipe and now start exploring the same medium in porcelain.
The last 5 years, since moving into my brand-new studio called “Ceci n’est pas une céramique”, my work is about the outdoors. I do surprise myself with how diverse my subjects, clay materials and colour palettes are. From huge traditional terra cotta flower pots with a twist, over small architectural colourful coffee table elements of swimming pools to my favourite subject, animals. From small origami type animals, over large realistic sea/pond life plates & vases up to oversized white porcelain butterflies.
Whether or not the work relates to something I made previously is not relevant. Any idea can spark new work. This comes from “the point of no return”, as soon and as little as one sketch is made to visualise an inspirational idea. The very next studio session(s) I just can’t help myself, but I need to find out how viable this idea is. By handling the clay and by doodling words and drawings in my logbook, I work through the technical issues ahead. I also consider if a series is an option. Only after this exploration do I ponder about my commitment. If its initial spirit is still present, if the look& feel is right and if there is an eagerness to commit, then I will make the piece(s).
I share the studio with Ion Chisca, a master ceramist, originally from Moldova, who joins me in the studio whenever he’s not delivering post and when his wife can miss him.
If you ever happen to come by, you will meet our studio dog and mascot Sidonie. She is a tiny, 12 year old miniature dachshund with a lovely personality. Her logo is on our window.
